We offer Metabolic Testing that is a simple, 10 minute breath test.

If you are concerned about caloric intake, a metabolic measurement is the standard test. It can be used to screen for slow metabolism and to construct a truly customized weight loss program. Periodic retesting will reveal the effect caloric reduction or medication is having on your metabolism.

The Reevue® measures the oxygen that the body consumes. Using this measurement it calculates number of calories that an individual burns at rest in a day. This technique is called Indirect Calorimetry. This information assists in nutritional assessment and medical nutrition therapy. The Reevue® can be used for any patient where a measurement of metabolic rate or oxygen uptake (VO2) will be useful, including weight management and nutritional assessment services.

Preparation and Having Your Metabolism Checked

Reevue® measures resting metabolic rate. It is important that you be able to reach a resting state during your test. You should avoid activities such as exercise or stressful situations that will prevent you from relaxing for at least two hours prior to your test. Digesting a large meal, as well as taking stimulants, such as caffeine, can raise your metabolic rate and should also be avoided prior to your test.

You will be able to lie comfortably while being tested. A nose clip may be placed on your nose and you will be given a disposable mouthpiece to breathe through. This mouthpiece is connected to the Reevue® by a hose that will measure how much oxygen you are breathing out. It is very important that you breathe only through the mouthpiece so this measurement will be correct. Both the mouthpiece and the tubing are sterile items that will be used only for you.

Finally, you just sit back and breathe. The Reevue® will indicate when it has calculated your metabolic rate. This takes anywhere from 5-10 minutes. The more relaxed and even your breathing, the quicker it will be able to determine your resting metabolic rate. In just 10 minutes, we can know precisely how many calories your body is burning. Your diet can then be tailored to maintain the right caloric balance. Proper nutritional assessment using Metabolic Testing can put you back on the road to better health!

How does the Reevue® measure metabolic rate?

The human body consumes a fixed amount of oxygen per calorie burned. The Reevue® measures the amount of oxygen the patient's body is consuming. Based on the measured oxygen consumption rate, the Reevue® then calculates the Resting Energy Expenditure (REE). Or, in other words, exact amount of calories that person is burning.

What is the difference between BMR and resting metabolic rate (RMR)?

BMR stands for Basal Metabolic Rate. BMR is a Resting Energy Expenditure test with a strict protocol to prepare the patient for the test. Therefore, the results from the Reevue® can be interpreted as BMR if the protocol is followed. The protocol has requirements regarding sleep, exercise, and fasting prior to the test, and temperature and lighting during the test.

What is the difference between REE and RMR?

These terms are essentially the same. REE stands for Resting Energy Expenditure. RMR stands for Resting Metabolic Rate. Both indicate the amount of energy a person burns at rest, and can be used interchangeably.
